Overview
Root canal treatment is an unfortunate but necessary treatment when damage to the tooth causes the tooth to die. This damage can be caused by
- Trauma
- Infection
- Decay
- Deep fillings
- Tooth fracture
When this occurs the dentist may have to remove the dead material inside the tooth and replace it with material to seal the cavity and stop further ingress of bacteria.
Tooth Longevity
A tooth’s longievity after a root canal is usually determined by how much tooth tissue is lost. Most teeth with root canals will probably require a crown in order to strengthen and prolong the tooth’s life. The New Zealand Dental Association has a very good brochure on line at their website which is www.nzda.co.nz about root canal treatment.
